“What do you mean gone?” The Hendra stood behind her desk, trying not to look as pissed off as she felt.

“This was your idea,” he said, that defiant grin on his face. She wanted to slap it away, but as he was only present via video com, she would have to wait. At some point she had found that grin intriguing, enticing. Now she found it annoying. He held up his hands, but the look didn’t change. “She is a hummer,” he conceded.

“And she stole the rohen?”

He shook his head and then nodded.

“Where is my metal, Colonel?”

“I don’t know,” he said. She glared, but it made no impact. He looked down rather than directly at her, clearly trying to work out what had happened. She could almost see the cogs turning.

“You haven’t seen this skill in her before?”

He shook his head again.

“Colonel, you are on thin ice here.”

He looked up and nodded slowly, his features more serious. “At Hendra, she showed some skill with metal and machines, not enough to convince me it was anything other than skill. She has a way…”

“Are you still attached to this girl?” Hendra interrupted, disappointed that his voice indicated there was more to his feelings than he had admitted.

“I was never attached,” he said, but the look in his eyes said something different. “She had a way with animals and plants. She grew up in the forest, and it was a skill her people had. There is no metal out there. Not on Rennet. There was no sign of a connection when she was Elite.”

“Is there something of these forest people we can use?”

“They are gone.”

“Where?”

He raised a defiant face towards her, and she sat down with a sigh.

“Tell me again what happened in the mine.”

His focus moved back to the floor at his feet. “I threw her in the metal. It was still and silent, the enforcers watching over her…”

“And…” she prompted.

“I knew them,” he muttered.

“You have taken out others you have known.”

He lifted his eyes to her again. “These are people I have already taken out.”

“That is what you said about Island Tarle.”

She could see him reaching for the com controls. “Colonel, I’m not finished. Where is my rohen?”

“I don’t know,” he grunted, and the screen flicked off.

She leaned back in the chair, tapping her nail on the lacquered armrest and staring at the blank monitor.

“He is not respectful enough,” a soft voice whispered from the side doorway. Despite her best efforts, the Hendra jumped.

“Alice, you can’t scare me like that.”

“Nothing scares you.” Alice stepped out carrying a cup of steaming green liquid, and Hendra’s stomach knotted at the idea of it.

“He thinks he is more important than he is,” she muttered, reaching for the cup, which Alice held too tightly in her hand. She looked towards the door and then back to Hendra. “What is it, my love?” Hendra asked softly as she stood, the cup still too tight in Alice’s hands. She worried if she tried to pry it free, it would burn them both.
